Who uses 7-spot focus?
Dec 8, 2003

Questions for the pro's out there...

I've read this numerous times before: "put the camera to center spot focus, and recompose after AF lock".

It's a technique that's often used, but I can't stop thinking: "then why the hell did Canon put 7 focus spots in (or even more)?!" To me, it seems like the prosumer-way of shooting.

Why am I asking?

Well, I'm in the market for a DSLR myself, and I was thinking of buying the 300D (tight budget yada yada yada), but I am unsure because it seems this camera has some trouble obtaining a correct focus when using the above method (in P-mode, the AI servo seems to kick in often when recomposing).

The problem has been discussed numerous times in the 300D forum, but in one of the latest threads, somebody suggested using all 7 spots, or at least more than one (without recomposing), and only switch to center spot (with recomposing) if no success with the first method. He also claims - and that could also be important info for this forum - that using more than the center spot focus gives more accurate AF results.

Now, on the 300D forum most people seem to be brainwashed to use nothing but that "center focus + recompose" technique. That's why I'm asking here: do you think he's right? And is it more accurate?

Thanks!

J.
