Softbox mounted on camera - no bracket

When using a softbox with a flash, is it acceptable to use with the flash attached to a camera hotshoe (Not mounted off of the camera)?

I read that the desired way is to use a bracket. I do not have one and do not plan on getting one...will the softbox work directly above the camera lens?
