CTF Challenge #42: National Icons
Oct 24, 2003

The topic for CTF Challenge 42 is NATIONAL ICONS.
I am going to impose three restrictions to the challenge and here they are.

1. NO NATIONAL FLAGS! A national flag cannot be the main subject in your photo. It may however appear as a VERY low key element in the background. When someone sees your shot, the first thing they notice should not be a flag. So subtlety blend it in or leave ‘em out all together.

2. NO NATIONAL MONUMENTS! That’s right no Eiffel Tower, Statute of Liberty, Pyramid, etc. shots. It is just way too easy to take these kind of pictures. Not to mention we have all seen them done thousands of times.

3. ONLY ONE OF YOUR SHOT CAN BE FROM YOUR NATION OF ORIGIN. The remaining two must be from some other nation. THIS RULE WILL ONLY APPLY TO THE ELIGIBLE CATEGORY. Why? For two reasons, one to make it more challenging (hey this is a challenge). Two, to prevent this from becoming too lopsided, I fear that too many of these shots will be from the US.

So what is left to shoot you may ask? Simple, look to culture for your inspirations. Think of a nation in terms of its fashion, food, art, history and so on. For example, for France you may think of food, wine and couture. For the US, baseball, hotdogs, apple pie & Chevrolet. For Canada, Mounties, hockey, beer. You get the idea.
