Alternative to AFS f2.8 28-70?

Is there an alternative to the AFS f2.8 28.70?
Sigma? Tamron?
With the same crispness and light? To work in difficult light? Mainly for people, portraits, some landscapes?
I wonder, if it's worth to buy a more affordable one - with money left for a wideangle. Or better spend the money, and never ever cry again after that one time amount in the candy-store?
