I currently have the 1.4D, but I once had the 1.8D and sometimes I miss it. It is more balanced across the frame, with a bit more "bite" than the 1.4. Obviously the bokeh is not as smooth, but IMO its still very good in all but the most demanding backgrounds.

I do remember it having a fair amount of purple CAs wide open (I owned two, one copy was worse than the other)

The one other thing I really like about the 1.8D is its size - its the smallest of the 85s and without a hood isn't much bigger than a decent size 50. That alone is reason enough for me to want to own one again, although wether that will come at the sacrifice of the 1.4D I'm not sure.
