EF 50mm 1.4 vs 1.8

I got a 50/1.4 for low light use, and I am a little disappointed by its performance at f/1.4 thru f/2.8. If I am not going to be able to use the lens @ 1.4 or 1.8, then why pay ~$200 more for 1.4, instead of 1.8 ? Any ideas? Agree/disagree?
