Very interested in more information on 6D & HSS. Why would the 6D be different from the other Canon cameras?

The 6D is not different.  You need to look in the settings of the camera.  It is not the flash that is the problem.  It is most likely the setting in the camera.  There is a flash setting in the camera that you set that will keep the shutter speed at 160-180 regardless of ANYTHING else that is going on. Regardless of it being in manual, TV, AV, whatever, if it recognizes that a flash (or remote trigger) is connected, it will keep the shutter speed at 160-180.  There is also a setting to allow any speed from flash sync (180) and longer.  And finally, there is a setting to allow any speed.  It has to be set at the last setting for HSS to work.
