Switching to Crop Mode

What are the adv of switching crop modes in camera? Aren't we able just crop it at post and will us more options in case we need those extra pixels outside of the crop?

NOTE the word ASSIGN.  That means F > f5 > Image+Command Dials > Choose Image Area
Unless factory default is changed,  using a DX lens automatically switch the camera to DX mode.

CAVEAT:  When in DX mode, images outside the DX frame are NOT captured.  That means NOT taking advantages of the FF sensor.
