Old topic.  Been reading a few of these to see what other people think of the 35 vs 40 vs 50 "debate".

I personally recommend the 40 over the 35 and 50, having used all 3 (on DX obviously).

35 was okay but the bokeh I didn't love, and I felt there was too much distortion.  And I felt the contrast/color of the 50 to be superior.

50 1.8g is a great lens but IMO too long as a walkaround or indoors.

40 has great bokeh and is a great length for walking around.  Good (low) distortion.  It captures very close to "what you see" eg. my family members' faces look right to me.  The macro ability is a plus.  Both of these combined more than make up for the smaller aperture.  I do find the focus can be a bit slower at times, but has not been a issue at all.

I would rate 40 > 50 > 35.

Still have all 3 however.. Ideally I'd probably like a Tokina 11-16 with the 40 and a 85/90/100/105, and would still hold onto the 50.  I'm also using a 17-50 2.8 Tamron at the moment.  Goodbye 35!
