Sorry for bumping and old thread, but I would also like to add that I owned 3 copies of this lens over 3 years. All 3 slipped with AF. One eventually didn't focus, even level.

This is obviously something Canon should recall if the issue still exists.

The main problem, is that it can take a long time for the issue to be noticed.

In my cases, it seems having the lens point upright in storage + some high temperatures made them get worse. I suspect there is some sort of lubricant that is getting into parts of the AF/MF system and causing the clutches to slip.

Shame, since this is still one of Canon's top models for performance. It's still the overall highest rated lens on PhotoZone.

Canon is very consistent with their production process, which can be bad if they are doing something wrong, and the problem propagates over many copies.
