A6000 vs NEX-5N vs Coolpix-A DR & Banding

As promised in this thread, here is a comparison of dynamic range and banding between the A6000 and NEX-5N. I've also included a comparison with the Coolpix A, which uses the same 16MP Sony Exmor sensor as the D7000/D5100 (and also NEX-5N but a better integration of it). For the Coolpix comparison I also included the nominal Higher ISO exposure, to demonstrate the difference of the underexposed+pushed exposure vs the equivalent exposure with the a nominal higher ISO (for comparing each camera's suitability for base ISO ISO-less workflows). All images are normalized to the same resolution but the framing of the coolpix comparison is tighter on the A6000 giving the A6000 a modest unfair advantage for absolute noise comparisons with the Coolpix. All shot raw and processed in LR 5 using all defaults except WB and the obvious exposure adjustments.

Conclusions:

  • A6000 is modestly worse than NEX-5N for banding but noticeably worse for shadow color cast (green cast)
  • A6000 is noticeable worse than Coolpix A for both banding and shadow color cast (green cast)
