Focus Hunting

I have two 12 year old lenses. A 35-70 AF and a 70-210 AF. Focus hunting occurs rarely, usually in low light or small image against sky type of condition. Something hard for the lens to focus on.

This weekend, I looked at two lenses in a store. The 60mm f/2.8D Macro and the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G AF-S. Both had trouble focusing. I asked if this was normal, as I rarely experience “focus hunting” with my old lenses. They said it was the poor light in the store. Since leaving the store, I’ve had lots of “focus hunting” with my old lenses. All in situations where I was not that far from a very well defined subject to focus on. A few times, it hunted, then settled on focusing on nothing. Turning the camera off and back on seemed to temporarily rectify the situation. Another person in the store said this was a function of the camera, and not the lens. I always thought it was a function of the lens.

Which is it. Is lens focus (hunting) a function of the lens or the camera?
