Using a Gray Card from a Distance

Hello, everyone!

I'm new to this forum...not so new to photography.

I'm a bit confused about using a gray card. I've Googled for an answer high and low but haven't had any success. So here I am.

Question is this: Suppose you're shooting a subject from a distance...let's say 50 feet. I'm assuming that to use a gray card to set exposure, the right thing to do is to hold the camera at the 50 foot distance, have an assistant hold the gray card where the subject will be, and then zoom in on the gray card.

Is that right? My thought is that getting an exposure reading from the gray card up close will give you a false reading, as the light reflecting off the gray card is much more intense than it is from a distance.

Am I right?
