How useful is a 1:2 90mm macro lens for slide copying?

I have a lot of slides to copy with my X-T1. I am thinking of getting an older MF Tamron 90mm macro (e.g. Type 52b or 52bb) but these can only go to 1:2 without the special Tamron 1:1 extension tube.
Will the lack of the 1:1 extension tube be partially compensated by the crop 1.5 factor? As long as all of the slide is covered I can always crop any small excess slide mount.
(I have the necessary slide holder and diffuser already from a previous system by the way).
Any advice would be very gratefully received!
Many thanks
Phil
