Wrestling with the Moon
Aug 31, 2014

Last night, there was a lovely, yellowish crescent moon over the water and some photogenic clouds. Neither were visible until well after dark, so shooting in blue light wasn't possible. Using an E-M5, 75mm lens, and tripod, I tried every combination of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO I could think of, but had no luck in getting a good exposure of the moon that would not darken the clouds and the light on the water past the point of shadow recovery in Lightroom.

So I took a shot of the moon.

Then another shot exposed for the clouds and water, dodging out the moon with the edge of my hand in front of the lens.

In Lightroom, I edited both images, then blended them, using Enfuse.

I’m curious to know if this is a commonplace approach, or if there’s an easier way to approach a situation like this one.
