Question about lens for pet photos

Hi! I first want to say that I know very little.
I have a Nikon D3200 with the kit lens, it works great, however when taking pictures of my "furkids" indoors I find that its not fast enough to capture that right moment and if I do, its not sharp enough or is blurry. That could be because I'm not setting it correctly because as I said, I know little about it. So now I'm searching everything up and hopefully learn a little more on using my new camera.

Question is, about lensing.
Would a prime lens 35mm work best for "pet portraits" while working indoors? Will it be faster than the kit lens and more sharper the photos, my pets tend to move quite a bit and with the kit lens I feel as though I'm missing those special moments.
