A friend of mine wants me to recommend a DSLR but I think he needs a P&S

A friend of mine recently saw some of my recent vacation shots and really liked them. He's taking a trip next month and wants me to recommend him a rig of his own, except he doesn't know anything about DSRLs. At first, he said he would be open to buying used lenses/body, but knowing what I know about photography (which isn't really that much), I think he should probably settle for a Point & Shoot instead.

What would you recommend to someone who wants many of the features of a DSLR without having to buy a few lenses? I'm familiar with the PowerShots of a few years ago but haven't looked at those in years, perhaps there are better cameras with more features/easier learning curves?
