D810 White dot fix is more than firmware update
Aug 26, 2014

Just got my D810 back within a week of sending it in after the white dot advisory.

The owner of the camera shop who sent it in for me told me that it was one of the affected models and that in addition to a firmware change made some repair/change of the "shutter plate".

Just did the white dot test again on a dark field after 30s exposure no white dots seen at +3EC and 50% clarity. A few dots (hundreds less) become visible at +5EC and 70% clarity. This is with Long exposure NR off and on and 1.2 crop and full frame.

They have duly dabbed a black mark on the tripod thread base.

So definitely worth sending it in. I assume the shutter plate thing is connected with the 1.2 crop.

Kudos to Nikon for not prevaricating like they normally do and just owning up and fixing it.
