RX100iii at 2.9x zoom vs Canon Ixus 255 at 10x zoom
Aug 22, 2014

I've just bought an RX100iii which is great but the drawback of course is the limited maximum 2.9x zoom. I also have a small Canon Ixus 255 point and shoot (Elph 330) with a 10x optical zoom and wondered what would give the better image quality and detail:

1: The Ixus 12MP 1/2.3" sensor at 10x optical zoom

2: Cropping the 20MP 1" sensor Rx100iii at 2.9x to an equivalent 10x zoom

3: Cropping the RX100iii Clear Image Zoom at 5.8x to 10x zoom

I don't use a long zoom very much anyway so it's no big deal having the smaller zoom on the Mark 3. I thought however that carrying a small longer zoom P&S at the same time might be a way to have the best of both worlds and still travel light.

I then wondered whether the small sensor and lower resolution of the Ixus would give you that much advantage in any case due to the lesser image quality of a P&S? I could test it out myself I suppose but I thought that there may well be some simple way of working it out if anyone knows?
