Why does the aperture changes only when I am shooting?

Hi

I am new in photography but I do have a little bit of knowledge on it. So my question is : why does the aperture on my SLR (I have an old film SLR Minolta x-300) changes only when I press the shutter? The rest of the time it's wide open (f3.5) even if I move the aperture ring, and i would like to see how my image would look like on other apertures through the viewfinder but I can't, is this normal?

Thanks, I hope was clear enough.
