How to defocus the background?

I'm feeling like an idiot, but, after reading the manual for my Lumix GX7, I'm still having trouble with "defocusing the background" when I take a picture of a subject that is more than 6 feet away from me using an Oly 45mm f1.8 lens. When the subject is closer, the background blurs quite nicely, but then much of the foreground is also in focus. How can I isolate a subject for focus while the rest is defocused? I'm a new photographer, obviously. :/ My manual taught me about aperture, but it's not helping to get what I want?
