What do the batteries do in a Canon TTL flash cord?

Hi,

I have the opportunity to buy a used genuine Canon off-camera flash cord. I've read many times that these can be used to run Fuji flashes (not the EFX8) off camera because the pins have the same spacing. In checking it out, I discovered that there are batteries in the camera shoe end of the cord. Does any one with a Canon background know what these do, and whether they have any impact on use for Fuji cameras and flashes? Can the cord be operated without them if it's not for a Canon system?

Thanks, Rod
