Lens Suggestion Indoor Christmas Shoot

Hello all,

I am a new photographer of about 6 ish months now, but have gotten into it at an exceptional rate; I really love it! Anyways, I just bought a d800e and plan to do an indoor portrait shoot up at my college probably in November. They have a Christmas tree that they all pose in front of, and I am just assuming they want it in focus (though it might be a little nice blurred as well).

What I’m wonder is if my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 will be sufficient to get a long enough depth of field for the Christmas tree at a large enough aperture so that I don’t have to over do the ISO, or would I be better advised to buy a 50 f/1.4d Nikon, or 85mm f/1.8 (On a budget so the 1.4 is out of my reach).

I don’t yet know how the 70-200 would perform as compared to a prime 50/85mm, I do however plan on using an sb-600 either bounced off the ceiling or in an umbrella, so that will help as well for the light issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great, thank you!!
