How to test your D810 for "White Dot Syndrome"...
Aug 20, 2014

There is a small, free, simple utility available to you. It's called "DeadPixelTest.exe". It's available here:

The author is Michael Salzlechner.

I took 4 exposures w/ my D810 [very early S/N]. One each at FX, 1.2, DX, and 5:4. For each of these shots I had the lens cover on and the viewfinder blinder closed. I turned off LENR. I set the exposure time to 30-seconds. I saved the images as TIFFs.

I then analyzed each of these images w/ Dead Pixel Test. Here are screen shots. The order is as I listed them above:

As you can see, MY D810 did not have many "hot" pixels and no "dead" pixels. Note that I dropped the "hot" threshold to 20 from the program default of 60.

I did the simple math to determine the % "hot":

FX => 36,152,320 / 14 = 0.000039%

1.2 => 25,067,520 / 10 = 0.000040%

DX => 15,360,000 / 3 = 0.000020%

5:4 => 30,179,328 / 14 = 0.000046%

This, IMO, is an excellent result. The rest of you who think your D810 is "broken" should run this test and get some objective evidence. Some D810s many indeed have a worse noise problem than mine does. Unless you run a test and get some data nobody will know.
