True or False: A 28mm Field of View Distorts Faces More than a 35mm Field of View

There have been many threads on this subject over the years, and a lot of disagreement.

Right out front, I want so say that "distortion" may not be the proper word. I'm specifically referring to the bending of facial features (large nose, etc).

My understanding is that the correct answer is: false

  • Only distance from camera to subject controls distortion.
  • A picture taken too close to a subject will have the same distortion whether shot with a 28mm FOV or a 35mm FOV
  • In an attempt to fill the frame, many photographers step closer with a 28mm than with a longer lens, which distorts faces, and leads to the misunderstanding that wider angles distort rather than distance.

Is this understanding correct or flawed? Thank you for confirming or teaching me how and why it is incorrect.
