I'm not sure those of us who don't use protective filters use terms like "so badly" and "ruin". Those are your terms. I don't use protective filters because they can't NOT degrade the image - even if only slightly.

The other filters you mention actually perform an image making function and are therefore useful despite degrading the image to a certain extent.
