Nikon 16-35 f/4 for Milky Way shots

I'd appreciate the benefit of your experience, as I decide whether to use this lens for a trip to Mauna Loa.

Until now, I've used my 14-24 f/2.8 for all of my star shots and love it. Now, I'm trying to lighten up my backpack as I head to Hawaii for a Gary Hart workshop in about a month. During at least two nights, we'll go to Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea for night work. I'm thinking about taking the 16-35 instead of the 14-24. so I'll have a wide lens for daytime work with filters, as we do other work on the Big Island, particularly waterfalls.

Have any of you used the 16-35 for star shots and what were your experiences?

Thanks,

Mike
