D810 face detection in matrix metering

Face detection in matrix metering is meant to help give a face correct exposure.  It sounds like a great idea.

On a tripod I set metering to matrix, and in the menu b5 turned face detection on. AF was 3d.  I use back button focusing.

A subject stood in front of a window, so that she was back lit.

A shot did not really expose the face correctly.  It was better with face detection off.  This feature as I was using it did not really solve the problem of the underexposed face against a bright background.

I don't know if I am doing something wrong or just don't understand what it is meant to do.  For now I will just use exposure comp or spot metering.

Has anyone else tried this feature?
