D810 RAW conversion using Capture One
Aug 13, 2014

For those frustrated with the limited RAW converters available for the D810, I have discovered that if you alter the EXIF data to read D800 or D800E, Capture One Pro will open and adjust the RAW images!

I used a program called EXIF Pilot, which is free, but if you want to do batch alterations then you need to buy the batch version which costs US$79.95, otherwise you need to alter each image individually. You can then change them back to their proper EXIF of D810 once Capture One has their RAW converter done for the D810. I am sure there are other EXIF data altering software out there, but this one just seemed to work easy.

In my opinion, the result is better than using Adobe Camera RAW, but that might just be because I am used to Capture One Pro. I like the colours from Capture One Pro and it is so much easier to use, IMO. Here is a previous image I had done with Adobe Camera RAW and then Photoshop, but have now used Capture One Pro 7 and Photoshop.

This was a shot from my previous thread, my first photos from the D810:

As you can see, the EXIF data reads D800E but is actually D810. This was the shot done at ISO12800.

D810 + 300mm f2.8 VRII + 1.4x TCII, f5.6, 1/833sec, ISO12,800 handheld. Cropped about 20%

Another more recent shot

D810 + 500 f4 VR, 1/200sec, f5.6, ISO6,400 handheld cropped about 30%.
