Rented a used copy for the weekend as I'm looking for a replacement from my Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM which is actually a pretty good lens in and of itself. Prior to renting this lens I thought the Sigma was a bit slow but it actually isn't. My issue with the Sigma is its size and I wanted a quality 200 mm lens at an affordable price.
As far as image quality is concerned, the Nikon wins out. In my humble, un-professional opinion it is slightly sharper and produces better color and it seems to have a crisper focus than the Sigma.
To be fair to the Sigma I believe its a bit heavier because it has the HSM motor and it is whisper quiet when focusing while the Nikon isn't due to is screw drive but I didn't find it distracting.
Again, the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM is not a bad lens at all, but I have a chance to purchase the rented copy of the Nikon for a very good price and it looks and feels practically brand new. I'm sure I can sell the Sigma to cover the cost of the Nikon with a little room to spare.
