Question about protecting your image

Since I'm pretty new to photography, I've been wondering how people go about trying to prevent others from.....I guess it would be stealing your image but perhaps their is another word for it.

So say you have a few images that you think are exquisite and you want to post online so others can view them and you can get your name out there.

Do you watermark your photo? (I've heard that a watermark can be taken off)

Do you resize your image? If so, by how much?

Or do you just put up the full rez image and say that at least it will get your name out there?

Is their anything else people do?

Or has modern technology made it nearly impossible to protect ones work?

One more question. When entering a photo into a contest/challenge, do you enter the full rez image to those or do you still resize it and or watermark it or do anything else?
