Is there something wrong with my 24-70 f2.8?
Aug 8, 2014

After shooting a couple of weddings now, I'm a little wary of my 24-70mm f2.8, and starting to think it's not as good as it should be. Wide open, it seems like even slightly out from the centre of the shot, details look 'smeared', regardless of bokeh - it seems like even if they're on the same plane it happens. Whenever I look at sample shots for the lens say on here or Cameralabs, Ken Rockwell etc, I don't see this effect at all.

Question is: is there something wrong with my lens, and should I send it away to be looked at? Or am I just being paranoid?

Any input would be much appreciated, thanks (Sample shots below)

70-200mm @70mm, f2.8, heavily cropped for reference. See how purple pod to right is pin sharp.

24-700mm @70mm, f.2.8, heavily cropped. See how purple pod (on same plane as pink flower) is blown, regardless of whether I'm ever so slightly out with the focusing.

24-70mm @70mm, f4

24-70 @f2.8 Very nervous bokeh on left 1/3 of shot. Never get that much on my 70-200.
