you can trust the salesman but only so far. In most camera shops big or little the mark up on the camera body is paper thin. Selling you a filter at a five hundred percent mark up may mean the difference between the shop staying in business or going belly up. Also many sales staff get commissions. If the sales man has been good and spent the time to show me all the things I want to see and carefully explained the difference etc, I may buy the filter even if I don't plan on using it in leu of a tip which in this milieu is not done. For the most part the better salesman will tell you the filter will protect your lens and not affect  image but if you ask him up front how necessary it is he will tell you while it offers some protection there are situations where it may affect your image.
