Lightroom: do you recommend enabling "Automatically write changes to XMP."?

"Automatically write changes to XMP." should be enabled to reduce the risk when the catalog is corrupted. I like to use DNG instead of CR2, since it's a bit smaller. However with "Automatically write changes to XMP." enabled, everything is stored in the DNG, and hence those large DNGs must be backed up over and over when I edit the photos. With CR2 only the XMP files need re-backup, much more bandwidth/storage/time friendly. Therefore I am considering the 2 following strategies:

(1) use CR2, and enable XMP.

(2) use DNG, and disable XMP. Then the catalog must be backed-up regularly and carefully. I plan to backup the catalog on every LR exit, then let Time Machine backup the LR backup.

I feel that (2) fits my need better and is relatively safe, however I would like to hear from the experienced before I execute the plan.

Regards,

Tony
