Lightroom spends a lot of time on calculating histogram -- what am I doing wrong?

I am new to LR and facing this problem: I am in Library module and try to go quick through a newly imported set of photos to decide what the keepers are. Whenever I move to the next photo, LR spends a few seconds on calculating the histogram (showing "Loading..." in the main pane and "Calculating..." in the histogram pane). Or when I zoom in (click or Space), it also takes a few seconds with "Loading..." in the main pane.

Is this the normal, expected behavior, or I am doing something wrong? Relevant info:

- macbook retina 15", photos + catalog on external hdd (5400rpm) via USB3

- LR version 5.6

- photos: RAW (.CR2). I don't recall this issue with DNG or JPEG photos

I tried to prebuild the 1:1 Preview and it fixed the above issues, but then the prebuild process takes very long.

Regards,

Tony
