Yeah, thats what I am asking myself now

Well if you're shooting heads and shoulders, stopping down will give you more DOF. If you got more of a full body shot then simply being further away will give you a larger DOF shooting at f/1.8.

You just have to know when it will give you better results to shoot wide open.
