I've discovered, using a Minolta 100-400 in very dark conditions (too dark to AF without the focus-assist illumination), that the pop-up doesn't work very well in this role, when compared to a flash with the red focus-assist lamp.

I think the issue is lens-specific. It doesn't affect the 50mm 1.8.

Just for the record, if you want focus-assist, but NOT flash for the shot, you can use any Minolta/Sony flash (with the iISO shoe) with the flash switched to OFF. The red assist lamp will still work. It doesn't work with Sony flashes with a hard on/off switch, only the older flashes with the toggle on/off button. I used a Minolta 2000i flash with the ADP-MAA adapter. Not as nice as having the lamp built-in, but a useful work-around.
