In the daytime you can set ISO 100 or 200 then use P mode. Set focus area to centre. Now you can basically point & shoot without having to worry too much, you can use the top dial to alter the balance of aperture/shutter if needed.

At night I would set ISO to 800/1600 and use M mode fixing my aperture to the widest possible & shutter to 1/60. It depends how dark it is & what lens you are using though. With SEL35f1.8 the above works quite well and you just need to adjust shutter slightly or simply deal with the darkness & adjust later in post processing. Look for the light, people illuminated by street lamps, shop fronts, silhouettes in car head lights. Embracing the darkness works quite well & tends to look good in black & white.
