Are Early Adopters Beta Testers of a Sort?

Just reviewing some of the many posts from early adopters of the new Panasonic flagship FZ model--the 1000. There is a tremendous amount of information being shared here and an important opportunity for Panasonic to catch some "features" or "glitches" that may have made it through all of their standard testing before release to the public.

Every product finds itself in this situation, but not every manufacturer uses the various forums to gather information on how the product is doing in real time. I would suspect, for instance, that Nikon learned a great deal about the value of photography forums after its problems with sensor dust or oil splatter in the D7000 and D600 models. Nikon has done quite a lot for its customers in repairing or replacing affected copies. Panasonic had some major problems years ago with its FZ18 showing blue banding and yellow splotching. So, most companies do their best (?) at pre-release testing. The outstanding companies are those that watch the established forums to see how models are doing in the hands of the intended. And, what's most important, is that they make adjustments either at the factory or through software patches when possible.

Sometimes the excitement of having a new camera is worth accepting the reality that being a first adopter carries a bit of risk. Buyers don't expect to be beta testers, and in the true sense of the concept are not, but if there are problems, we certainly look forward to companies working to solve them in a reasonable way.

Panasonic is, hopefully, watching the reports on DPR and other forums. To me, the more cameras out there in use should, in reality, be of great value to the company. If any problems show up in the FZ1000, Panasonic needs to jump on them fast. This camera definitely has star power!

If life is, indeed, a journey, ask yourself how you can make it as interesting as possible, so that at each day's end, you can give a good accounting of what you have learned.
