Which Sony Alpha to replace Minolta 35mm camera?

Several years ago I bought my wife a Minolta 35mm camera to take pictures for her scrapbooks.  It came with a 35-80 lens and we eventaully added a Tamron zoom lens (75-300) along with an external flash.  For the last few years I've been pushing her to move to a DSLR but she's frugal and wouldn't change because the Minolta still worked.  Now it is developing issues and she's agreeable to spending the money on a DSLR.

What would be the best Sony Alpha I could buy to replace the Minolta Maxxum?  We are novice photographers so we don't need a lot of advanced features.  Essentially, I'd like to find a good price on an Alpha body that I can use for my existing lenses and flash.  I don't mind buying used, I just haven't had time to research the Alpha line to know what would best fit our needs.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Kevin
