Entry primes vs good zooms

Here's a question worth asking; are entry level primes as good as a good zoom?

I recently ran some tests of my SAL 35f18 against my Zeiss 16-80, a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 on the A77 mk2 and wasn't impressed. (of course testing at equivalent focal ranges and f-stops)

In fact my Zeiss is only a little sharper than the Tamron (in real life human perception) but they are both obviously sharper than the 35.

I've also tested my Minolta 50f1.7 against the zooms, and that didn't fair well either. Although competitively much sharper than the 35f1.8.

Now fast primes... Generally you buy them for when you're stuck in a pub and wish to use them wide open... But is that good enough?

Have I just got a dudd? back when I had my a55 <signs himself with cross> I remember the kit 18-55 and 50f1.8 being tack sharp.
