Nikon and 35mm 1.8

I realize that having a crop sensor makes my 35mm lens out to be more like a 50mm lens. My question is what is this lens good for? I bought it originally intending on using it for portrait shots and while it has better bokeh then my 18-55mm nikon zoom lens, I have heard that it will not do as well as other lens for portrait shots. I would like to start taking portrait shoot but feel I'll equipped with this new knowledge. Any recommendations? I do not mind investing in another but do not want to spend more the $300 maybe $400 (if needed). Does the 18-55mm have much use or should I use that as a trade in? My lens focus right now is portraits and wildlife (every now and then, do to my job I drive a lot and see hawks, deer and elk I have my d3200 in the car whenever an opportunity arises.) Thanks for your help.
