Why are Canon's APS-C sensors smaller than the others

I've always wondered why it's a bit smaller than the competition.

It does make a difference at the wide-end since that's where small differences in millimetres count the most.

That being said.. the other guys certainly don't have a stabilized $300 ultra wide-angle, so I'd definitely rather have that. Huge advantage there.
