We bought ours about 2 years ago to fill a gap in our range of lenses. Never previously needed a lens with quite such a reach, but now that out photographic interests have broadened we wanted to invest in a decent quality longer zoom lens that could work on both full frame and crop sensor cameras.

After doing a lot of research, and comparing a vast range of professional and user reviews, as well as magazine and internet tests, we decided on this model, as its output compared favourably in reviews against similar models, and even those made by the camera maker.

In truth we have not been disappointed with our purchase. It is very strongly built, and though heavy, is just about manageable hand held with a Canon EOS 7D by my wife, who is very lightly built. At the moment she has limited mobility, and finds it very helpful. She can take pictures of the wildlife in our large garden from her upstairs study window using the window ledge as a support. Given the weight of the lens, with a camera it is obviously better operated from a tripod or a sturdy monopod to give more assured stability. The zoom movement is very smooth and responsive and the autofocus is pretty quick and accurate. We have found it to be well balanced on either the Canon EOS 7D or 5D MkIII.

Image quality is really good if you stay at f8.0 and above, and, as you would expect from a lens of this type, it operates better at shutter speeds of 1/1250 and above. Colour and contrast are both good. The OS (Optical Stabilisation) is effective, though we have seldom had to use it as we tend to stick to using the lens in really good light.

At the time we paid £709 and the price has lessened a little since then. No regrets whatsoever about the purchase, especially as similar specifications from other makers cost a lot more.
