is it the old autofocus or the lens

my first autofocusing lens was a canon ef-s 17-85 f4- 5.6 IS USM. and still to this day it is the sharpest lens i have used for more than 4 shoots on my body, a 350d. there is only one other lens that has surpassed its sharpness on my 350d and that is the canon 70-200 f2.8 l is usm II. some other lenses used on it that are regarded as "sharp" are the 100mm macro is usm L, 50mm 1.4 usm, 50mm 1.8, 70-300 DO f4.5-5.6, and 85mm 1.2 but none were sharper then the 17-85. the 17-85mm has been used primarily in the body since 2006. so my question is will all theses lenses become as sharp at the 17-85 on a newer body with a more sophisticated af system? is the 7 point-one-cross-type-af system designed over 10 years ago to blame or is it something else? and why does the autofocus work SO well with a basic standard zoom that was never regarded to as especially sharp?
