I think whether the crop works or not comes down to how much you need to crop. Not that different than whether it's best to use a TC. If you have enough pixels then you won't lose much when cropping. But if the subject is small a longer FL, even with a lower quality lens, works better than a crop.

I think this came up a while back when the question was whether the 50-200 with a TC was better than the 75-300. I thought it was clear that it was. My guess is that, if the subject is small, a 75-300 shot would be better than a cropped 50-200 shot. Something like 50-200 + TC > 75-300 > 50-200 cropped. (At the long end of course).
