Recent trip to Japan--state of photography impressions
Jul 29, 2014

Hello everyone,

just got back from a recent Summer vacation trip to Japan. As an amateur photographer I was obviously very interested in the enormous array of camera shops available in every mayor city of the country, but what most caught my attention was the different type of gear used by tourists.

I saw the following:

- DSLR's are NOT dying. By far the most cameras I saw in every tourist attraction were big, bulky Canon or Nikon cameras with big lenses (not telephoto big, but large enough).  Westerners and Chinese tourists in particular preferred them.

- Sony NEX cameras are used by almost everyone, Japanese or foreigners alike.

- The Panasonic G series are quite popular. Saw them quite a bit.

- Even though both are very important manufacturers in Japan, I had a hard time spotting Olympus and Fuji gear (I use an X 100 myself).

- Big electronic stores had their best-selling camera's in a special display. Most of the time they were budget DSLRs by Nikon and Canon, followed by Pentax (this surprised me indeed).
