Ring lights for macro photography are small, generally just bigger in diameter than a typical lens.  Since the flash is very close to the subject it doesn't need to be very powerful which is why you can now find many macro ring flash units that use LEDs, not flash tubes.

Ring lights for portraiture are larger in diameter and more powerful.
