"Great shot" - a statement
Jul 28, 2014

In thread after thread of the gear forums, I see people praising mediocre photography with simple opinion statement like: "great shot", "well done", "that is a keeper", etc. without further rationale.

At the same time, constructive criticism is often met with disdain. Like: "that is a good photo." "it might be better if ..." or "did you consider trying to ..."

The photos are posted in threads titled with something like: "The amazing new canikon DXXX".

There are very few accidental masterpieces.

While the stated purpose of many of the forums here is gear related, gear will never (very very rarely) make someone a better photographer.

These threads usually end up with hurt feelings and / or spiral into flaming pits.

Could there be some guidelines for commenting on others' photos drawn up? Possibly just a suggested way in which to give constructive comments. These comments might just help build this site into a more useful resource and maybe even help people become better at using the amazing gear that is available today.
