Sharpness comparisons

Now on pretty much any photography forum, you'll always see people getting into heated arguments about which lens is sharper. To me this is always very subjective and very pointless for a few reasons.

One reason is a photographers shooting/processing skill has quite a large effect on what they can achieve with the lens. If you're browsing images for certain lenses in a Flickr group for example, you'll see quite a large difference in quality between images, even though it could be from the exact same gear. If all amateurs were the first to get a new 24-70 for example, it may be misleading and lead people to question the quality of the lens since they may just be shooting JPEG and treating the DSLR like a point and shoot. Obviously we learn a lot as we go along and are not expected to be pros from the second we pick our camera up, it's just that we would be so much better off focusing on the areas that our skills are lacking instead of fighting pointless fights.

Does anyone else agree that people should focus on getting better at stuff like post processing so that there won't even be a reason to worry about which lens is sharper?
